Christie Stoll, Executive Director for IDeal and Nick Thiros, IDeal Field Representative will speak about Idaho’s Section 529 Plan established by the state in 2000 which is designed to help individuals and families save for college in a tax-advantaged way.  Research from Washington University in St. Louis http://csd.wustl.edu/Publications/Documents/WP10.01.pdf shows that students who have a college savings account are seven times more likely to enroll and complete a form of higher education regardless of amount saved.

This session will focus on the importance of saving for higher education from an early age and:

• Explaining the differences between scholarships and grants
• Savings versus borrowing
• Tax deductions and incentives for higher education
• Tuition reduction and cooperative fee programs
• Level of education needed for Idaho jobs and Idaho’s wage ranking
• Idaho’s 60% goal
• Cost of college in Idaho and nation
• Overview of 529 versus other savings options
• Highlights and unique features of Idaho’s 529 including myths and FAQ’s
• Q & A
