Aug. 5-28: “Twelfth Night” at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival

Get swept away in a little “midsummer madness” with this classic comedy of disguise and mistaken identity. Sebastian and Viola, twins separated by a storm at sea, make their way into Illyrian society where misplaced affections and misunderstood intentions provide a humorous backdrop for the shenanigans of lovers, clowns, and servants. Aug. 22-Sept. 14: ‘Dog Head Stew’ Exhibition

Visual Arts Center – Gallery One (Liberal Arts Building). This exhibition is free and open to the public. There will be a reception from 6-8 p.m.Thursday, Sept. 1. This unique portfolio celebrates Native American traditions and cultural persistence, which over time and situation has been redefined, honored, manipulated, categorized and stereotyped, but not vanquished. The twenty-four artists included in this exhibition, who come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, created prints with traditional and non-traditional archival print media. The portfolio was organized by Elizabeth Klimek and Melanie Yazzie and was recently purchased by the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Collection. The exhibition of Dog Head Stew – The Second Course is supported by the Arts and Humanities Institute at Boise State. The regular gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Aug. 22-Sept. 14: ‘Ni De Aquí Ni De Allá’ Exhibit

Visual Arts Center-Gallery One (Liberal Arts Building). Admission is free and open to the public. There will be a reception from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1. This portfolio features contemporary Mexican printmakers from both the United States and Mexico. The prints reflect issues concerning today’s Mexican/Mexican-American, and also shed light on border issues and the ever-changing face of this nation. This eclectic group of twenty-two artists is comprised of traditional, non-traditional, academic, and DIY printmakers. There is a rich history of Mexican printmaking and this portfolio exchange evidences that this tradition continues to evolve on both sides of the border. The portfolio was organized by Rogelio Gutierrez, Assistant Professor of Printmaking at Arizona State University-School of Art. The regular gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

School Group Visits. Encounter Shakespeare’s 1623 First Folio. Help theater, poetry and literature come alive for students at this once-in-a-lifetime event. Details and registration. Docent-led class visits by arrangement: 90-minute encounters include Shakespeare Out Loud – Students explore Shakespeare’s language through interactive games and exercises, Shakespeare In Context – A hands on activity in which students learn about Shakespeare’s life and times, and First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare. All visits are by reservation and are limited to 60 students per encounter.

Sept. 19: Film, ‘Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict’

1 p.m. Education Building, room 109. In honor of National Opioid Awareness Week, the Department of Criminal Justice and the United States Attorney’s Office present the film Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict. This documentary was collaboratively produced by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in response to the growing epidemic of heroin and opioid abuse across the country. It is designed to raise awareness and educate young adults of the dangers posed by these drugs. U.S. Attorney Wendy Olson will provide some brief opening remarks. Following the film, DEA Diversion Investigator Charles Wahl will give a brief presentation about the scope of the opioid and heroin problem here in Idaho and across the country. This event is free and open to the public.

Sept. 21: First Folio in Idaho Closing Event: “Our Revels Now Are Ended.”

7 p.m. A & H Yanke Family Research Park. First Folio Closing Event: “Our Revels Now Are Ended.” What did it take to bring the First Folio to Boise? Join a panel of Folio event coordinators as they discuss the nearly two-year process from application to exhibit. We will highlight the ups and downs of this labor of love bolstered by a shared passion for Shakespeare and desire to bring The Bard to a diverse Idaho audience. After the discussion, experience a special, remount performance of Shakespeare’s Sonnets by Idaho Dance Theatre. Shakespeare’s language is brought to life in voice and movement in this beautiful and moving work choreographed by Marla Hansen. “First Folio! September 22 in Albertson’s Stadium at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Bring your own blankets and pillows for a movie under the stars on the world famous blue turf. This year’s showing is “The Jungle Book”. The Jungle Book is a live-action/CGI film that tells the story of Mowgli, an orphaned human boy who, guided by his animal guardians, sets out on a journey of self-discovery while evading the threatening Shere Khan. Free for students with ID and $10 for non-students.
